Peugeot 206 World Rally Car
Peugeot announced its return to World Championship Rallying with the launch of the 206 WRC Rally car. Following in the tracks of the successful 205 T16 which won the World Rally Championship for both constructor and driver in 1985 and 1986, as well as winners of the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1987 and 1988. The 206 WRC has been developed from existing components of the road-going 206, such as the body structure, engine block and cylinder head. Whilst retaining its wheelbase dimensions, the overall length is increased by 17cm to 4m. Seventy percent of this increase is due to the new front moulding. The overall width of the car is increased by 12cm to 1.77m with the car supporting 18" alloy wheels. The engine is a 2 litre 4 cylinder 16 valve, turbocharged with twin overhead camshaft whilst the transmission is 4 wheel drive with a six speed sequential gearbox and three controlled differentials. The 206 WRC began its assault on the championship in mid season 1999, and has already won the Swedish Rally in February 2000.
